Retanning, where leather acquires its identity

Retanning adapts the leather’s properties to the article being produced. This is the stage in which its feel, performance and much of its character are developed.

04
The stage that defines the article

Retanning defines the leather's final performance

Once tanning has stabilized the leather, retanning develops the properties required by each application. The combination of retanning agents, fatliquors and dyes determines the feel, firmness, flexibility, dye affinity and technical performance of the finished article.

01 — Retanning

Chemistry that adapts leather to every application

During retanning, different agents are introduced to modify the leather’s performance without altering the stability achieved during tanning. Each formulation is designed around the finished article and the properties it must deliver.

+

More body and firmness

For structured articles such as handbags, belts and rigid leather goods.

−

GREATER SOFTNESS AND FLEXIBILITY

For articles requiring drape, comfort and a softer feel.

02 — Fatliquoring

Fatliquoring defines the leather's feel

Fatliquoring introduces specially formulated oils that restore mobility to the fibers and develop the leather’s feel and flexibility.

A

Softness

Oils reduce friction between the fibers and create a more pleasant feel.

B

Flexibility

This allows the leather to bend and recover its shape without cracking.

C

Water resistance

Some fatliquoring formulations provide water-repellent properties tailored to specific applications.

Chemistry under control

The products used at this stage meet ZDHC protocol requirements and form part of a chemical-management system designed to minimize environmental impact.

When color is part of the fiber, it is also part of the quality

03 — Dyeing

Color is part of the leather, not just its surface

During dyeing, dyes penetrate the leather’s internal fiber structure. The color is not deposited on the surface: it becomes part of the material itself, retaining its depth and uniformity throughout the article’s useful life.

01

Every formulation is validated through light, rubbing and perspiration fastness tests to ensure its performance in use.

02

We control color variation between batches to maintain a high degree of consistency.

From leather performance to its final expression

Once the internal properties have been defined, the stage that determines the leather’s visible appearance begins. Finishing adds texture, sheen and protection, while final inspection verifies that every article meets the established quality standards.
