Preparation comes before tanning

Preparation encompasses the operations that condition the hide before tanning. Each one helps stabilize the material and create the foundation on which its final properties will be developed.

01 — The starting point

Raw hide is a living material

Raw hide is a natural material whose structure changes over time if it is not handled correctly. Preparation stabilizes that structure and readies it to receive, evenly, the treatments that will define its properties.

This is where the quality of the finished leather begins to take shape.

02 — Beamhouse operations

Five operations. One objective

Before tanning, the hide goes through five consecutive operations. Each prepares it for the next, and together they create the conditions needed to produce stable, consistent, high-quality leather.

01

Soaking

Rehydrating

This restores the water lost during preservation and removes residual salt and impurities. Uniform hydration is essential for every subsequent stage.

02

Unhairing and liming

Opening the fiber structure

The hair and epidermis are removed while the fiber structure is opened in a controlled way to facilitate penetration of subsequent treatments.

03

Fleshing

Controlling thickness

The flesh is removed and the hide’s thickness is evened out. This operation creates a consistent base for the rest of the process.

04

Deliming and bating

Preparing flexibility

The alkalinity from liming is neutralized and enzymes condition the fiber. The balance achieved in this operation directly affects the leather’s feel and performance.

05

Pickling

Preparing for tanning

The hide’s pH is adjusted so it can receive the tanning agent under optimum conditions and ensure uniform penetration.

Leather quality begins long before tanning.
03
The critical point

The balance that defines the feel

During bating, enzymatic action must remain within a very precise range. Too much weakens the fiber structure; insufficient preparation limits the leather’s flexibility.

Every batch is monitored individually to achieve the balance required by each article.

Everything is ready to transform hide into leather

Preparation has stabilized the hide’s structure and made it ready to receive the tanning agent. The stage that will define its stability, strength and performance throughout its useful life now begins.
